Blessing of the Fleet 2014 | Narragansett RI
This weekend is the annual Blessing of the Fleet 2014 in Narragansett RI both at the Pier and in Galilee, July 25 & 26th. On Friday evening it is the Blessing of the Fleet Road Race with about 4000 runners, walkers and wheelchair entrants compete on a picturesque and certified 10-mile road course through Narragansett, ending at "The Towers" on the ocean (immediately adjacent to Seafood Festival at the Pier). All runners receive official Blessing of the Fleet T-Shirts and prizes and support the worth causes for charity that the Narragansett Lions Club and Citizens Bank support.
Generally held on the last weekend in July each year, the event is "kicked off" with a scenic, 10-mile road race on Friday evening. The course, which winds its way through historic Narragansett, is officially sanctioned and listed as one of the top three races of its distance in New England. The runners hail from all over New England, across the country and around the world. The race's finish line is by "The Towers" in Narragansett, next to the Atlantic Ocean, site of the Blessing of the Fleet Seafood Festival. It is a not to be missed evening event to cheer all on or to compete. Get your running shoes on and walk with the many to raise funds for the great scholarships and causes the Lions Club raises funds for.
And on Saturday, it is the flotilla of boats leaving Great Salt Pond in Galilee to the breakwater to be blessed as it is the Blessing of the Fleet. It is an amazing colorful event that takes place at noon on Saturday. On a good day, hundreds of vessels line up to parade past thousands of spectators all decked out with banners and colors.
The Blessing features a colorful parade of commercial and recreational watercraft, large and small. Each parading vessel is blessed by the various clergymen, and judged for prizes by State and local officials.
