Yes, it was the House that Rocks in Narragansett RI yesterday while doing pop bys to see clients yesterday, when one of their neighbors asked me if I'd come down to his home down the street. Okay, so I'll be good and stop by and what a surprise...a little tilted perhaps was the house or I'll say small cottage. See rock pilings, stantions or modified jury rigging use to be the order of the day in building cottages here.
Now this is Narragansett RI with palatial homes as well as lean to cottages but it's also a beautiful ocean front community that has the best beaches in the North East. Most of the ocean side homes were moved by the water or wiped out by the 1938 hurricane. Re-built homes have appeared since that time and speckle the Narragansett RI landscape here. As this is a flat ocean level community, it is well known that a strong enough hurricane, which we haven't felt in over 70 years would rock, move and dismember many homes along this community's oceanfront.
Well Bud (as I'll call this man of a later decade) this house looks a bit like it needs some structural work but that's not my forte, I'm a Realtor. Well the slight rocking doesn't bother me, he said. Oh, no dear he says, I'm looking to get some refinancing since my daughter wants me to anchor the house down better. Really...what with tarps and bungee cords I'm thinking! Yes, I'm showing some disbelief in my face.
Don't know about the refinancing Bud and I'm no structural engineer but I do believe you will need to have one involved. And see in RI now we have a Coastal Resource Management Council which will need to get involved since your property is really under their review (being within their legal boundary of coastline protection) on any modifications done to a home. Yes, it's going to cost some money to do this (dare I mention the tarps and bungee cords?) project. I think we need to talk with your daughter also if you don't mind.
As we look down the coast today, we have three hurricanes starting up the Atlantic coast and I do hope that they stay well off the shore for Bud's sake too. Who am I to introduce change to this ole swamp yankee's life? Bud's lived pretty contently for the last 45+ years here in his house that rocks in Narragansett RI.
