Buying Fire Wood Must Be Local In-State
Whether you are buying cord wood for your wood stove or for your backyard firepits, it must now come from within your state in Rhode Island. We have finally joined the other states of Connecticut and Massachusetts due to the invasive insects that are destroying trees and are carried across state lines. If you have not contacted your local wood supplier do not wait because prices will be going up for you and supplies will be limited.
The Asian longhorn beetle and and Emerald ash borer can be carried across state lines within the cut wood. One does understand the need to contain and keep these insects out of RI. These insects have done such damage to trees in CT and RI so therefore the ban.
It is important to protect our trees and it is hoped that all homeowners understand the importance of following the protocol instituted by the state.
For questions regarding the movement of firewood and/or logs or the quarantine protocol, please contact either Liz Duguay, DEM/Agriculture at 222-2718 ext. 4510 or Paul Ricard, DEM/ Forest Environment at 568-2248 ext.17.
