Freaky Wednesdays- Smoking Electrical Outlets

Freaky Wednesdays- Smoking Electrical Outlets

Now this was suppose to be a quiet evening in my household, cleaning up the dinner dishes, listening to the news...when all of a sudden I hear a noise by my cell phone just like a school fire alarm sound  !  This is for real...my cell phone  is set to talk to me- no exotic rings so what I thought was coming from my cell phone was coming from this electrical outlet below it:

gfi outlet

The GFI outlet was making a high pitched and spaced alarm sound  several times and then sparks flew out of it and then smoke!  I was alone in the house and had never come across anything like this before- have you??!!  I called my son asap and he said I must have gotten water in it so I checked the circuit breaker- no trip, and just went around concerned that I might have an electrical fire in the walls so I stayed up until almost midnight  to make sure nothing was smoldering.

My smoke alarms are all in great working order (remember you should have changed your batteries already in them!) so I slept well...and actually woke up to call my electrician who came over in the morning.  He says that it does happen and the GFIs do expire after a certain amount of time depending upon their make and may need to be replaced.  So just be aware if the outlets around your GFI stop working that something may be going on electrically in your home and address it.

So here is to a good GFI outlet that will not scare the @#$%  out of me again and at least another home life ownership experience for me.  How about you- any weird things like this you've encountered- please share it with me today!  Freaky Wednesdays with smoking electrical outlets in RI...
