Yes, it was the House that Rocks in Narragansett RI yesterday while doing pop bys to see clients yesterday, when one of their neighbors asked me if I'd come down to his home down the street. Okay, so I'll be good and stop by and what a surprise...a little tilted perhaps was the house or I'll say small cottage. See rock pilings, stantions or modified jury rigging use to be the order of the day in building cottages here.
Now this is Narragansett RI with palatial homes as well as lean to cottages but it's also a beautiful ocean front community that has the best beaches in the North East. Most of the ocean side homes were moved by the water or wiped out by the 1938 hurricane. Re-built homes have appeared since that time and speckle the Narragansett RI landscape here. As this is a flat ocean level community, it is well known that a strong enough hurricane, which we haven't felt in over 70 years would rock, move and dismember many homes along this community's oceanfront.
Well Bud (as I'll call this man of a later decade) this house looks a bit like it needs some structural work but that's not my forte, I'm a Realtor. Well the slight rocking doesn't bother me, he said. Oh, no dear he says, I'm looking to get some refinancing since my daughter wants me to anchor the house down better. Really...what with tarps and bungee cords I'm thinking! Yes, I'm showing some disbelief in my face.
Don't know about the refinancing Bud and I'm no structural engineer but I do believe you will need to have one involved. And see in RI now we have a Coastal Resource Management Council which will need to get involved since your property is really under their review (being within their legal boundary of coastline protection) on any modifications done to a home. Yes, it's going to cost some money to do this (dare I mention the tarps and bungee cords?) project. I think we need to talk with your daughter also if you don't mind.
As we look down the coast today, we have three hurricanes starting up the Atlantic coast and I do hope that they stay well off the shore for Bud's sake too. Who am I to introduce change to this ole swamp yankee's life? Bud's lived pretty contently for the last 45+ years here in his house that rocks in Narragansett RI.

Ginny, what a great post....it amuses me what is important to some and not to everyone.
Looks like it has an amazing view. He is probably used to the rocking - not like the visitors such as his daughter.
Ginny.....hurricane season is here now and there are so many homes on the ocean that will be in danger....the cape has many and there are other areas where the shore line is moving closer to the homes.....a few are about to fall into the ocean....it's incredible.
Ginny, while reading this, I was thinking of Hurricane Earl heading your way early next week - good luck!
Very nice views. Rhode Island is quite a wonderful place. I visited it a few times when I was in my teens with my parents. I have relatives that live in Woonsocket.
Alan..isn't it always in the eye of the beholder! thank you
Yvette...i'm sure his daughter has a different view on the house but he's a 'swamper' & they are tough..
Barbara...you bet..i think i'm going to do a few posts on flood zones ...looked at a house with a buyer & the agent had no idea it was in a flood area since she's out of area...need to know your stuff & protect yourself...
Joan...yes, we're overdue for a scathing hurricane...i wanted to go swimming in the ocean after open house but they say the rip tides are dangerous today...you don't have that problem in CO!
Michael...you've commented before about your RI connection & i so appreciate it...it's a wonderful environment to grow up in ...best to you.
Ginny......I love the pictures. What a pleasant setting.
Carra, if i only could of take a pic of the house you'd be laughing...it's a tranquil setting when a storm isn't brewing...best to you
Ginny: Hope the hurricane misses your area. As for the dude with the funky house, well, he better be on his knees praying that a strong wind doesn't blow over his pile of rocks.
chris..i'm keeping my toes crossed on this one...thanks for coming by.
Ginny-those are great photos. Hope Earl misses you:)
It (Earl) was sighted over the Virgin Islands recently. Hopefully it will blow out to sea and harm noone.
Earl looks like he's bringing rain & riptides to us...that's bearable....i hope, Robert!
